Review
This is just one of many excellent geological books for children created by this superb author of non-fiction. They are almost all very accessible for children from second grade up. The reading level is that of a good second grade reader but the information is told in such a way as to be of interest even to adults. The illustrations, usually colored photographs, are beautiful and exciting. In this book, Simon talks about the geological causes of earthquakes, the instruments used to measure them, some occurances of earthquakes worldwide and the possibility of someday being able to predict them accurately. Simon contains just enough of the more sensational material (photographs of the devastation in San Francisco, for instance) to entice browsers into the solid science here.
