Review
If you're looking for a ghost story that's a little bit scary and a bit dark, but not overwhelming, this is a great choice. Throw in a girl who dreams of stardom, and the camaraderie of the stage, and you have an engrossing story.
Olive wants to sing in musical theater, more than anything. The trouble is that her mother, a former child star, is very critical, and makes it impossible for Olive to relax and perform well. This results in a disastrous audition for summer drama camp.
When Olive runs off in shame, through the theater district of the city, she finds Maudeville, an old, elegant theater. Taking the stage, she performs her song as she had hoped to and the owner, Maude, offers her the lead in their vaudeville show. Oddly, some of the cast members are ghosts. Still, Olive thrives in her new community and grows in confidence.
The theater is an escape from her stressful home where she and her mother are grieving the death of Olive's father and experiencing a financial crisis. Every once in a while, something feels wrong at Maudeville, but Olive is determined to look on the bright side and bask in the glow of Maude's praise.
The magician's assistant seems to have a deep secret and her brother Felix warns Olive not to go back to the theater and Olive soon discovers that things there are not as benign as they first seemed.
Ignore the cute cover, this is a haunting ghost story. By turns scary, sad, and quirky. Evil ghosts cause narrow escapes and grief is a central theme. Beautiful, sometimes poetic, writing vividly creates the characters, settings, and Olive's inner world. Good for some third graders and up through sixth grade.

Better Nate Than Ever by Tim Federle. Novel. 288 pages.

In this very funny book, 13-year-old Nate loves Broadway musicals and is certain he could be a star in one, even though he's never even been to a Broadway musical. With the support of his best friend, he hatches a scheme to go to New York City to audition for one. This quirky boy, who is always singing and never seems to fit in, is often teased and bullied for being gay, although he doesn't know if he is or not. What he does know is that he doesn't feel at home in his community, but when he goes to New York he finds that sense of belonging in the musical theater community. The issue of Nate's sexuality is a subtle undercurrent and is never really mentioned directly. In New York, for instance, he notices, with surprise, that men can dance with other men "who probably liked Phantom of the Opera." Read More. -

This Newbery Honor winning ghost story is great for reluctant readers as well as more enthusiastic readers. Three early adolescents, Zach, Alice, and Poppy, have been playing an elaborate game for years using action figures and dolls. When Poppy says that the ghost of a young girl told her that the bone china doll is made from her bones and contains her ashes, the three friends embark on a journey from Pennsylvania to Ohio to bury the remains at the girl's grave. If they don't, the ghost will curse them. The excellent writing takes what could have been an all-too-familiar premise and turns it into something extraordinary. Use with fourth grade and up. The Ghost Belonged to Me by Richard Peck. Novel. 146 pages.

It's 1913 in small town Illinois, and Alexander has been told by a schoolmate, Blossom Culp, that he has second sight. It isn't long before events prove her right. He sees and eventually talks to the ghost of a young Creole girl from the Civil War era who is haunting the barn. The book is not difficult to read or understand. It should be well within the reach of most fifth graders and could go up or down. It makes a good read aloud with some great slapstick comedy and not a little historical information.
